Hi racers, friends &
fans,
I am excited to announce The 16th Annual Shane Memorial Race is
Saturday, May 25 at The New London - Waterford Speedbowl where
my family started our NEMA journey. NEMA & NEMA LITES will be
running hard for this WIN! The LITES will be racing 37 laps in
honor of Shane's number.
I have written many articles about Shane, his journey, his crash
and his legacy over the years. You can look back at your emails
or on our web site Shane Hammond.org to see how this adventure
began and has refocused over the years. I am very proud that we
have contributed to the safety in the car and on the track.
April 6, 2008 rocked my world it has made a difference in yours
too. Just as NASCAR made changes after Dale Earnhardt's horrific
crash, the past 16 years we have experienced changes to improve
safety. The mission is to keep all cars, drivers, staff and
tracks as safe as possible. Cars can be replaced, you can not
!!!
The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation (a not for profit)
organization was founded after asking the tough questions; could
this crash been avoided, is everything in place to keep racers
safe? Since the start of The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation,
we have changed the way drivers, clubs & tracks think about
safety. Restraints, helmets on track officials, full containment
seats, extra cushion in the walls just to name a few. We have
drivers that have testified that these changes saved their
lives. We must continue to spread the message while keeping
Shane's legacy true. Those who never met Shane, please google or
just ask any old timer in NEMA about this racer who always ran
clean and would help a fellow racer in a heartbeat.
I need to thank my family, Shane's friends and racing colleagues
who continue to support me and my safety mission and who remind
me how special Shane was. The list is endless and changing as
years go by. In the beginning we were a 501 (c3) but my grief
kept getting in the way and I just couldn't keep up with all the
legal stuff so I settled to be just a not for profit. In the
early years we had many donations but now they are few but I am
forever grateful for all who have supported this foundation so
it could help others stay safer.
A lap board for NEMA and LITES will be on the Facebook asking
for $25.00 donation per lap that will be divided up equally in
the drivers purse. I am looking for the Hard Charger Awards
sponsor if anyone is interested. Please reach out to me via
email or text if you would like to make a donation of any kind.
2024 shirts have been ordered for this race and we are offering
NEMA members a special price of just $5.00. That's a $10.00
savings!!! You can order in advance to secure your size with an
email or text.
Please be sure to come to the midway on race day to check out
the book, Trackrat with only a limited supply left. We will also
have raffles and items for sale. A family fun pack of 4 fishing
rods will be raffled this year. I enjoyed fishing with my dad
and my boys grew up fishing at out local ponds. Thanks to Bill
Van Slyke for this generous donation and his commitment to our
cause along with Ellen Pernisiglio who is always providing us
with an afghan to raffle.
Thank you ALL who have supported me, my family and the SHBF for
the past 16 years. I feel truly blessed. Thanks to Reverend Don
Rivers and Racing with Jesus Ministries which keeps us in prayer
all over the country. We are one of the few sports that still
BELIEVES. Race hard and have fun, see you Saturday!

Pete Pernesiglio Sr. |
Dad, congratulations for
winning this years Shane Hammond Memorial award. NEMA was
started for the little guys of the sport, the working men. If
there was anyone who exemplifies this more, it’s my old man.
Always willing to help another competitor. A car owner with over
four decades of dedication to NEMA, a contest board member and
he’s a pretty good TV show guest too! I wish I could be there to
celebrate with you tonight but the TV business calls again. In
closing I’d like to wish everyone good luck this coming season,
I wish you could all be winners.
Congratulations, Dad. I love you and enjoy your evening.

Hi racers, friends & fans,
How do I begin..... It's around the corner, The 15th Annual
Shane Memorial Race, it takes my breath away. Some days it feels
like 15 seconds, 15 minutes, 15 hours but not 15 years. He's
missed so much.
Many of you know the story but we have new members & fans so
please share your Shane stories. Our NEMA journey started at
Waterford and that's why this is so special to me and my family.
Glen & Randy Cabral gave Shane his first ride in a midget. I
remember it like it was yesterday. He crawled out of that car
BEAMING!!
It was quite a journey after having to give up his karting
career due to the G force after emergency brain & spine surgery
at 15 due to a tumor. It was amazing to watch him race again and
put the wind back into all our sails and the rest is history.
Shane was a good shoe in a low budget team and he was grateful
every time he could climb into a car and race. He loved the
sport of racing, the drivers, and the NEMA family. In his 27
years he touched many as many touched his young life. We need to
create EXCITEMENT about honoring his legacy and the mission to
keep all drivers, staff and tracks as safe as possible.
Since the start of The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation, we have
changed the way drivers, clubs & tracks think about safety.
Restraints, helmets on staffers, full containment seats, extra
cushion in the walls just to name a few. We have drivers that
have testified that these changes saved their lives. We must
continue to spread the message, SAFETY FIRST!
Pits open at 2pm on Saturday and I ask that you all stop by the
Shane booth on the Midway. We will have some merchandise on
sale, great raffle items. Again this year thanks to Bill
VanSlyke we will have a kids bicycle raffle. I am very fortunate
to have selfless family of volunteers to help make this event
happen every year.
Thanks to all of you who have sponsored laps, with only a few
still left. The lap board for both divisions is on the NEMA
facebook page.
I am looking for the Hard Charger Awards sponsorship. Please
reach out to me if you are interested being a race or lap
sponsor or would like to make a donation to SHBF which helps
racers with safety issues.
In closing I want to thank all of you who have supported me, my
family and the SHBF for the past 15 years. I want to thank
Reverend Don Rivers and his team at Racing with Jesus Ministries
which keeps us in prayer all over the country. We are one of the
few sports that still BELIEVES. Race hard and have fun, see you
Saturday!

2018.... Just another year to most
but for me & Anthony (Bug) it's a milestone of heartache &
memories. Shane's fatal crash was a cold April day in 2008 at
Thompson. There was chaos all around the crash site and complete
silence in the stands. It did not look good yet we held onto
hope as many prayed.
He was just 27, wheeling the car of his dreams, the #4 Mike
Jarret, Nokie Fornoro NEMA midget which he had shaken down on
many occasions. He felt proud and privileged that day to be
chosen to wheel this ferocious machine. He was living his dream
especially with Nokie as his team mate, he loved that man and
how he shared all his inside information about each track they
ran together. Shane was respected and loved by the NEMA family
and he shared all he had heart & soul with everyone in the club.
Randy & Shane had a special relationship as they met while Shane
was dating his sister, Toni. They had heard of each other
through the racing channels. Glenn & Randy put him in his first
midget at the Waterford Speedbowl and there it began. Glenn was
like a dad to Shane, master and student, working side by side
wrenching, learning and enjoying each other company for years.
Shane had racing in his blood, he was born into it and started
at an early age in karts like most. He had a nickname Smoothie
at the High Groove Speedway in NH and he learned to love the
high line which many drivers fear. He grew at his sport but Lady
Luck was not kind with many mechanicals with his lower budget
operation. He never gave up, never lost that smile or will to
help anyone who asked. He had an old soul, a kind heart and a
good word for all. He believed there was more to life for him
after cheating death with emergency brain and spine surgery at
age 15.
Shane was 38 last month. There were no candles or birthday songs
just the memories of years past. He entered the kingdom of
Heaven doing what he loved, there is no more pain and suffering
for him. We were blessed to have him in our lives.
... that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have
eternal life (John 3:15)
Please think about the stories you shared with Shane or the
stories you have heard about him. If you have never had the
chance to hear about Shane, ask any of the veterans or his
brother, Anthony who idolized him for his strength and tenacity
and his humor!!!
Please take the necessary precautions to be safe and never Drive
faster than your Angel can fly.
To our Angel, Shane..... God Speed to all.
Honoring Shane's memory is The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation
at 501 c 3. Our goal is to assist racers with safety equipment.
We are funded by private donations and fund raising efforts.
This season we have t-shirts, long and short sleeve, sweatpants,
hats, books and A 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY sticker available for
purchase. Please help us keep all drivers safe with education
and equipment.

Anthony Marvuglio to Compete at
Thompson's World Series of Racing
in Memory of Brother, Shane |
In
a midnight oil meets Cinderella story, it was learned at 2:30 AM
that Anthony Marvuglio, brother of Shane Hammond, will compete
in the Lites portion of the Northeastern Midget Association's
event this weekend at the Thompson Speedway World Series of
Racing, driving his brother's yellow #37. The last time that the
car saw a competition event, was ten years ago - the day Hammond
was tragically killed.
"He was just 27, wheeling the car of his dreams, the #4 Mike
Jarret, Nokie Fornoro NEMA midget which he had shaken down on
many occasions. He felt proud and privileged that day to be
chosen to wheel this ferocious machine. He was living his dream
especially with Nokie as his team mate, he loved that man and
how he shared all his inside information about each track they
ran together. Shane was respected and loved by the NEMA family
and he shared all he had heart & soul with everyone in the
club," said Hammond's mother, Deb Marvuglio.
It wasn't until two months ago, that mother, Deb, and younger
brother "Bug" or Anthony, decided to put back together the
yellow #37 machine that Hammond last drove. It was with the help
of Danny Cugini and his family, Randy Cabral and many long
nights that saw Marvuglio working til 2 AM out of his trailer,
that got the car done for this weekend's event. Cabral, was a
special friend of Shane's, - a best friend, and his father,
Glen, like a second father to Shane.
"Randy & Shane had a special relationship as they met while
Shane was dating his sister, Toni. They had heard of each other
through the racing channels. Glenn & Randy put him in his first
midget at the Waterford Speedbowl and there it began. Glenn was
like a dad to Shane, master and student, working side by side
wrenching, learning and enjoying each other company for years,"
said Hammond's mother.
When the NEMA Lites hit the track this weekend, all eyes will be
on the Marvuglio/Hammond #37. |

DEEPER MEANING |
I had the opportunity to
attend some races this past week that carry more meaning than
“just another race”. We call them “Memorial Races”. These races
help us remember competitors and others connected with our
racing community. Who is on your mind today? Greetings in the
name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
For racers numbers are as significant as words; #00, #1, #3,
#7ny, #37, #61, #76 to mention a few. Many of our lives have
been built around these numbers. There are many memories,
stories, laughs, cries and encouragements that come to mind when
we reflect on these numbers. They are milestones in our memories
of those who hold a special place in our hearts.
Hebrews 12:1-2a;(NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such
a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off
every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so
easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God
has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus,
the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Remembering the endurance of others helps us continue on against
the obstacles we face every day. Those that are gone too soon do
not leave us alone; they leave us with their example. They
encourage us to continue on.
I remember being in Victory Lane for the Shane Hammond Memorial.
Shane left us in the prime of his life, but he didn’t leave us
alone. He left a deep impression on our hearts. His life, the
difficulties he overcame, everything he endured just get into a
racecar. I still can see the smile on his face. We joke about it
often, but Shane was living the dream.
I shared Victory Lane with his mom that Saturday night. The joy
on her face as she presented trophies to the winners in Shane’s
honor. She truly was letting his memory supply the strength for
her to carry on. She not only is living life, but she is using
her life and effort to help others be safer as they race through
the Shane Hammond Believe Foundation.
Sometimes I wonder how difficult it would be to carry on if one
of my children died. I wonder where the strength would come
from. I think of Shane’s mom, Deb Marvuglio, and I know I’ll
have someone to emulate.
Deb took the time to pour out her heart, to share what is really
going on behind her smile and effervescent personality. As I
share this with you again reflect on the meaning of the numbers
in our sport. What have they meant to you? How can a number mean
so much? I could not find better words to convey their meaning.
“37, is it just a number?”
“The number 37, what does it mean to you? To me, it’s not just a
Midget that was transformed over the years from black to white
to yellow & blue. The 37 was a dream that became a reality for
my son, Shane. A young man who had an infectious smile and
bright blue eyes. Shane learned about risk and reward and much
more by 15. An amazing karter whether it was dirt or asphalt, he
had a handle on it.
Fast forward to 15, emergency brain and spine surgery where the
risk is death and the reward life; but what kind of life was yet
to be determined. Shane survived and with determination like no
other. He fought through pain and the odds against him to get
back to karting. When the pain became too much he looked for a
car that offered more suspension and protection from the
grueling jarring of karting. NEMA that was the ticket; that was
the open wheel racing of choice.
Shane crewed with the Cabral’s and that magical day they let him
take out their car at Waterford, he beamed as he climbed out.
There was one person missing that day, his grandmother (his
biggest fan, Betty).
We looked at each other and he said, “She’s here, she didn’t
miss it”.
Those magic moments continue as his brother Anthony “the Bug”
Marvuglio experienced that feeling at Waterford on more than one
occasion. Bug has expressed, “Mom, he was in the car with me”,
referring to Shane. Waterford is a magical place for me and my
boys.
Back to the 37, not just a number, a tribute to Shane’s
Grandfather, Jack Glockner a man that helped Shane live his
dream every step of the way. Shane and Jack (Pa) worked side by
side and Pa bought him that last 37 from Bob Bradbury another
NEMA legend that was taken too soon.
So as you get ready for the Shane Hammond Memorial, please think
about the risks, the rewards and the price; is it all worth it,
are you making the right choices. Every race is a risk, life is
a risk. Shane’s last race, in the Jarret #4, was a reward to
him, he felt respected, excited, and worthy. He knew he could do
whatever it takes. Sometimes our days don’t go as planned and
that one day in April, God had other plans; He took Shane out of
his painful body and gave him eternal life….. For whosoever
believeth…..shall have eternal life. (John 3:15)”
Deb Marvuglio, Shane and Anthony’s mom, Shane Hammond Believe
Foundation
Life holds deeper meanings for all of us. We think we have it
all figured out. We think we know what tomorrow brings. We
don’t. We do not control the hand of God. As we remember those
who walk before us, who show us the right and wrong, who lead us
through this life, remember there is a deeper meaning to all
this.
Romans 10:10; (NLT); For it is by believing in your heart that
you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your
faith that you are saved.
We are looking forward to the season ahead, Please consider
helping us make every effort to reach out. Until next time,
remember God loves you and Jesus is Lord over Auto Racing! God
Bless. Remember, that your prayerful support helps us continue
this ministry. Thank You.

Trackrat: Memoir of a Fan - $20 includes tax from SHBF
Paperback: 252 pages |
What compels
a young man or woman to spend ungodly amounts of money driving a
racecar every weekend at the local track, risking life and limb
at 150 miles an hour, entertaining friends and total strangers?
Author editorial cartoonist Bob Englehart had to find out after
witnessing the tragic wreck that killed Boston-area driver
Shane
Hammond at Thompson
International Speedway. This non-fiction book explores a slice
of American culture, the short track racing obsession, and how
the author became a fan as a child, bedridden for a year by
rheumatic fever with only his imagination, pencils, and
watercolors to pass the time. The author writes about his
parents’ divorces and remarriages during an era when divorce was
rare, giving him and his brother Tim a stigma in their
neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The author discovers the
extraordinary motivation behind
Shane Hammond’s desire to race by a chance encounter with his
mother and younger brother in the pits at the last race of the
season. Trackrat: Memoir of a
Fan is about love of family in spite of the complexity and
confusion it may involve and the author’s working class heroes
on the track. This isn’t NASCAR; this is your neighbor.
About the Author:
Bob Englehart is the
editorial cartoonist for the Hartford Courant and lives in
Connecticut with his wife Pat McGrath. They have three grown
children and four grandchildren. He's syndicated worldwide by
